How to Get Beach Sand Out of Your Car

Let the sand dry completely, pull and beat the floor mats, loosen the carpet with a stiff brush, then vacuum slowly in several directions; sand that has worked into the carpet backing usually needs a shampoo and hot water extraction to come out.

Why sand won't just vacuum out

Sand doesn't sit on top of the carpet. Every time someone gets in and out, it's ground down through the pile into the backing, and it collects in the seat rails and seat belt channels. A vacuum pulls what's on the surface and leaves the rest, which is why the floor still crunches after you've cleaned it.

If you're doing it yourself

  1. Let it dry. Wet sand clumps and sticks to the fibers. Leave the windows cracked in the sun for a day if you can.
  2. Pull the floor mats out and shake and beat them against a wall or tree, away from the car.
  3. Brush the carpet hard with a stiff brush to loosen the sand from the backing.
  4. Vacuum slowly with the crevice tool, going over each area in two or three directions.
  5. Slide the front seats all the way forward, then all the way back, and vacuum the rails and the carpet under them.
  6. Get into the seat belt channels and the gap between the seats and the console.
  7. Repeat the brush and vacuum once more. The second pass always finds more.

Keeping it out

  • Keep a towel or a rubber mat in the trunk for beach days and put the gear on it.
  • Rinse or brush feet and slippers before getting in.
  • Rubber floor mats come out and hose off. Carpet mats hold on to sand.

When it needs more than a vacuum

If the floor still crunches after two passes, the sand is in the backing. Our Interior Detail, $250 for a car, $300 for an SUV or van and $375 for a truck, includes a shampoo and hot water extraction of the carpet and upholstery, which lifts it out instead of moving it around. Very heavy sand adds time, and we'll quote it before we start.

Shipping the car soon? Do any shampooing well ahead of time. Matson asks for a dry interior at drop-off and says not to shampoo it.
